No one knows exactly the cause of geographic tongue, though some factors include genetics, irritation from alcohol or spicy foods, and vitamin B deficiency. It is characterized by harmless lesions or patches on the tongue, where the tiny bumps or “papillae” disappear and resemble smooth red islands rimmed with white. The patches or lesions can migrate around — hence the name — though it usually resolves itself over time and is not compromising to your health.

Diagnosis does not usually require any tests, though we recommend coming to visit us if you notice any changes in your tongue’s appearance. We will be happy to take a look to ensure that your oral health is safe and to answer any questions you may have. We look forward to seeing you!
